Tearing Apart a Transformer

Summary:
Ripping apart a Transformer for the Copper.
-OVERVIEW-

About:
There were a bunch of broken APC UPS power supplies in the trash at work, so I grabbed a few for parts. The Transformers are huge and have lots of copper windings. The only thing about these transformers, though, is that they are for ballasting, not voltage inversions, so the wire segments you get out of them aren't long enough for most applications, so you have to be aware of that to begin with. Good for metal exchange credits though.

Dissassembly Pictures:

After removing the 4 bolts in each corner, you just grab a hammer for breaking the segements loose, then a screw driver for prying them apart. It's crazy how many plates are in there! You may also want to wear a mask becasue as you pull this apart the dried glue flakes and permiates a fine dusting in the air which is probably toxic.

Here is the portion where the wires are wrapped. Each layer is coated in a yellow electrical tape like covering.

This is the larger guage wire liberated from the unit. There were 3 different wire sizes in this particular transformer.
