Company X-mas party 2010
December 16, 2010 11:27 PM
In almost 4 years of working at Square-D I finally went to the company Christmas party. It was so nice, and I wasn't expecting it to be as formal as it was. It was held downtown at the Nashville Double Tree hotel. We basically had a whole floor reserved. There were 2 cash bars but every person got 3 vouchers, there was a raffle for various gift certificates and even an apple iPad, which Hatcher won somehow ;-) I pretty much hung out with Tien and his sister, Serena for most of the event, ScottY and his wife sat at our table as well. There was karaoke and dancing after the buffet style dinner, there was even a build your own stir fry station. After the party a bunch of us went downtown to the bar, Decades for additional dancing and drinking. I used that time to sober up actually, as I didn't get a room at the hotel. We were able to get discounted rates for that night. Anyways, a rainy foggy night, but a fun one!

Tooth Pulled
December 13, 2010 9:01 PM
All done! I had my 3rd and final wisdom tooth pulled, and like last time they did a really good job. I was in and out of there and back at work in under 45min! I got there, she sat me, shot me full of Novocaine, waited 15min, pulled it out, gave me some gauze, and send me on my way. I really don't know how they can yank it out so quickly leaving me to only feel a little pressure. I did hear a crunching sound, and that's a little disconcerting, but over all, no prob. I had no real pain the rest of the day, just a headache around bed time. Nothing a little pain killer couldn't handle.

Beer Batch 10: Another Stout
December 04, 2010 11:22 PM
I just finished bottling beer batch 10, which was actually the same as batch 9, a Guinness Extra Stout Clone. I try to make something different every time, but since I had some of the ingredients left over, and since batch 9 turned out to be so delicious, I just figured I'd make it again.
So, bottling day is always the least fun day out of the whole process. Sterilizing all the bottles is such a long and tedious process, not to mention, I always wind up making such a huge mess! This batch yielded 38 12oz bottles, and 8 1-pint-9oz bottles. Anyways, once everything is all done, and once the beers are ready to drink in another 3 weeks, it will all be worth it!

Today at work we ran the farthest I've gone so far, 5.56 miles, that's about 9 kilometers. My baseline time for this route was 49:06.

Here is the course plotted on Google: GOOGLE MAPS

Thanksgiving Break; Camping 2010
November 29, 2010 7:12 PM
Khine got to spend an extra long Thanksgiving break here in Nashville. And even though I had to work on many of the days she was here, we accomplished so many things! She finally got a haircut (I didnt want her to ever get one :-), we went x-mas shopping (several times), she tried on wedding dresses (for the first time with no intent to buy which is why I was allowed to attend), we tested our new tent in the living room, for the first time made our very own Thanksgiving meal (it was quite intimidating just buying a whole turkey but we pulled it off with flying colors!), brewed beer (another double stout since I still had some ingredients left over from last time), cooked Tabbouleh, homemade spaghetti sauce, stir frey, and lots more!

But most importantly, we went camping for the first time together! We've been planning to go over the Thanksgiving weekend for quite some time, and the weather even seemed to be holding out for us, but on the week we wanted to go it came down to making a decision, go in the rain, or go in the freezing cold, we went with the latter. So other than not being able to sleep because it was so damn cold, it went pretty good! We went to the Land Between the Lakes; Energy Lake Camp Ground, site D9 ($12 bucks a night for the basic sites / $18 for the ones with electric). We got there after doing some black Friday shopping in Clarksville (since it was along the way) but there were still a few other people there so it wasn't completely deserted, the wind was non existent, our camp fire held up all night with the 16 pieces of firewood we bought for 5 bucks along the way (an average sized fire will consume about 4 logs an hour), and everything else went smoothly. We will deff go again, but not before the nights warm back up.

Jogging Club at Work
October 21, 2010 01:43:42 PM
I discovered there is an organized group of runners who jog several miles 3 times a week at my work. Normally I would run on my own in the gym on a treadmill, but after hearing about this group I thought I'd go with them instead. I figure running with others could help keep me motivated and could keep pushing me to do better.
Yesterday was my first run with them, and let me tell you, 4.2 miles at even a leaserly pace was excruciating for me! The course they take has so many hills and I've never even attempted more than 3.2 miles and these guys are seasoned marathon runners. I was able to keep up for about half way, then I started lagging behind a little. A few times some of the guys ran in place till I caught up. The most embarrassing part was when we went past this one house with a bunch of guys on the front porch. I was able to hear one clearly say, ''And theres the guy who always lags behind.'' :-/ I wanted to go over there and punch him.
At around 3.5 miles, I peeled off to head back to the office. I walked a little, then they caught up with me only 5 min later, so I ran with them all the way back to the office. So I probably ran 3.75 miles and walked .1, while they ran the full 4.2. When we got back, we stretched for a good 15min. I was huffing, but regained myself quickly. I'm a sprinter, not an endurance runner but I guess if I stay with these guys I'll eventually be able to run the whole way.

COMMENT: You did it, hon! The distance you ran and the pace you ran at was a big achievement. Don`t let anybody belittle it. Hmmph, the SOB was probably jealous cuz he probably can`t even entertain the thought of himself running. I`m sure you`ll be jogging right beside these seasoned marathon runners in a couple of weeks.

Khine`s First Fall Break
October 19, 2010 03:22:46 PM
Khine got 2 days off giving her a 4 day weekend that she was able to spend here in Nashville. It's the most time she's been able to spend here since the start of school, but it went equally as fast, and despite her time off, I still had to work.
Friday I left work early to pick her up, but because of tight deadlines I had to bring her right back to work with me until I finished. Afterward we went to a new Mexican Restaurant, Casa Fiesta on the corner of Bell Rd and 24. We then watched some Futurama episodes and retired early.
Saturday we went to the apple store to get her iPod replaced. Then the Whole Food grocery store again. This time I actually got that huge 1L Pauliner Beer stein and some fine cheeses. Then we went to K&S to get some things for stew and stir fry. At home we cooked, took a nap, and watched more Futurama.
Sunday we went bowling, she beat me on the first game again! Then to Centennial Park to play Frisbee and walk around. Then we tried to find this gourmet popsicle place near her old work. It's called Las Paledas on 12th and Kirkwood, and they make really good home made fruity popsicles for $2.50. At home we cooked some more and finally finished off the new 6th season of Futurama.
Monday it was back to work for me, but she went to work with me again and stayed only until all the nearby stores opened. She then used my car to go around while I worked. At lunch she picked me up and we ate together at Hickory Falls. They have some awesome lunch deals now btw. I then went back to work, she did some more shopping, then she picked me up, then we went home. Khine changed into a pretty dress she just got and we went out to the Flying Saucer for some drinks and actually got some wedding planning done. Looks like we may have some dates solidifying. When we got home we watched BeerFest and went to bed.
Tuesday we got up extra early because it was time for her to head back :-( I dropped her off at the meeting point in Murfreesboro and she was off, and I went back to work. Even made it in before 8. Another weekend come and gone in the blink of an eye!

Shady Craigslist Sale - Server Sold
October 20, 2010 01:29:53 PM
After many months of posting and countless price reductions, I finally sold my old rack mount server. It's aged but works great, has decent stats, and runs stable, it just takes up lots of space and plenty of electricity. It wasn't worth me keeping around. Anyway, this whole sale was shady from the beginning. When the buyer initially contacted me, he gave me a disconnected phone number, his email address had the word SCAM in it, he never once asked to see the server operate, he never even asked a single question about it or it's functionality, he just wanted my address to meet so he could pick it up right away.      Anxious to finally get this out of my closet, I agreed to sell it to him, but I wanted to meet in public, so I had him meet me at Publix, front and center before work. When I get there, we see each other from our car and wave. Neither of us get out. I get out and stand by my car cautiously, he starts signaling me to come over. I hold my ground. Eventually he gets out and moves toward me. I meet him half way and all seems ok so far. He spoke very little English, only Spanish. He was in his late 30s and had a rough face, like he lived a very hard life. He was wearing shorts down around his knees and a cammo tank top. We both head to my car and I get the server out of the back seat, hand him the box of accessories, and then we head to his car. He opens his trunk, I look around, in his car and in his trunk for someone who might try to jump me. I even hand the server to him to put into his own trunk so he can't try to push me inside. When it was time to pay me, he had to get back into his own car, I thought he was just going to drive away, then I thought, maybe he's getting a gun! But luckily he just pulls out a wet crinkled ball of cash and pays me my dues. Feeling a little better, I asked him again, what he plans on doing with it, he only says, 'Church'. I'm like OK, well good luck with that, I hope you know how to use it. Then we drove off in different directions. So all turned out ok I guess, but man was that the shadiest legit transaction ever! And church my butt, he probably found buyers for 10 times the amount I sold it for.

COMMENT: If only you had his contacts to sell it at 10x the price. But, you must be glad just to get it out of your closet. And phew, thank god that transaction went well.

Nashville Oktoberfest 2010
October 9, 2010 08:22:41 PM
Today was Nashville's Oktoberfest again! And this year I dressed the part, I wore my very own pair of authentic lederhosen. Unfortunately this was the first year I went with out Khine, but I did go with a co-worker who doesn't drink that much, so it worked out great for the both of us. I showed him around and all the places to get the best beer and food, as well as where the traditional polka music areas are, and he was able to drive me back to his place to level off. It's getting more and more crowded each year, like it's getting really difficult to just walk around by lunch time. And they keep running out of the big beer mugs earlier and earlier, by 12:30 all the tents were completely sold out of any sized glass mugs, luckily I brought 2 mugs for the both of us, and man was that a money saver. They were charging 5 bucks for people to buy a regular sized red party cup, but it also only cost me 5 bucks to get my huge .75 liter mug filled! A much better deal. So I guess I couldn't get my full sized Pauliner glass again :-(
Oh well, the German platters were great. $10 gets you a huge bratwurst on a bun, sauerkraut, baked beans, and potato salad. I also got a soft pretzel a little later, wasn't hungry enough to get the Reuben this year, which is $9 by the way. Also at the festival this year was a stand selling a huge variety of traditional steins, small ones from $25 to giant 14inch ones for 100. There was also one of those giant street performer robots, that was interesting. Other than the heat, it was another nice event.

COMMENT: Yup, he walks around, there is a man inside believe it or not, a street performer. I think some entertainment firm hosts these things to public events, sort of like how you can reserve a clown for parties.

Free Flu Shots at work
October 5, 2010 08:05:24 PM
Got a flu shot for the first time since childhood, I usually opt out of it each year. Not really sure why I decided to get one for a change, I mean, I haven't had the flu since I was a little kid, and I never bother getting the flu vaccines (probably because I never get the flu). But this time I guess I figured I didn't want to get sick over the winter and my job is offering the vaccine for free again, so why not. Well now I wish I had never got the thing. Man! In only 3 hours after the injection, I started feeling woozy, weak, and disoriented. By the time I got home, I had all the classic symptoms of H1N1. Fever, dizziness, apathy, stomach discomfort, runny nose, wheezing, heat flashes rapidly followed by cold sweats, it was terrible! I felt like complete and utter crap. I was even getting worried weather I'd even recover or not by Friday, which is the start of all the Oktoberfest activities.
Well sure enough, the next morning, after a good deep sleep (despite the fire alarm going off at 1am due to the furnace being fired up for the first time of the season), I felt great. I got out of bed with a mild headache, but my body felt as if I had never had any sort of sickness at all. I suppose since it's been so long since I've had any sort of flu or vaccine, that I'm be more prone to the symptoms involved with getting these shots, and man did I ever get the symptoms alright!

COMMENT: No more flu shots. Period.

Advanced ION Training
September 23, 2010 06:35:07 PM
Finally got to take another class at work, it's been quite a while so this was deffinitely a welcomed departure from the norm, plus I miss the free catered lunches! Anyway, the course was advanced ION programming, which is a propriatary language we use for power control and measurement. We were taught good technique, proper brainstorming, process flow, and module specifics.
At the end of the class our final project was to write a program to have one of our electrical meters monitor and keep a cup of coffee hot. It's actually more complicated than you would think. We factored in lots of what-ifs, like should the burner stay on if the temp fails to rise? what if the temp falls to quickly? should there be a manual override? how big should the histeresis loop be to keep the temp optimal? etc. This was a great project because as engineers, it is our job in life to make things as complex and expensive as possible :-)

Double Mile, Whole Foods, Last 2 Days
September 28, 2010 09:21:45 PM
After trying for 2 weeks I was finally able to run 2 miles in 16 min. I've only ever been able to do it once before. It's a lot harder than it sounds! I am currently in my late 20s at 150 lbs and near 6 feet, so running this distance in that time is actually the requirement for a passing grade in the Army's boot camp. I found that to do it on a treadmill the easiest pattern for me is to run the first .75 miles at 7.5 mph, than .25 at 8 mph, this will get you an 8 min mile, then repeat for the second mile.
Just this past weekend Khine was here again and this time we discovered another neat new area worth exploring in the greater Nashville area. It's sort of like a downtown area of Green Hills. Lots of outdoor shops and places to eat, but my favorite place of all, the whole foods stores! Man these places are great. I've heard about them, but have never actually gone myself. Not only do they have all the good for you healthy and organically grown stuff, it's their variety too, they have herbs, grains, and other ingredients you just can't find in normal grocery stores. And the cheese and beer selection! OMG, I felt like a kid in a candy store. Cheeses of all ages and worldly origins, and beers from all different micro breweries. They even let you build your own 6 packs like the vintage cellar back at VT. Also, if you go on the weekends, there are enough free samples throughout the store that you could practically make a meal of it. Oh and their salad and hot bars are better stocked than any all-you-can-eat restaurant I've ever been to.
Other things of mention. Today my skynet server stopped running, I think it's hard disk is dying but not sure yet, it keeps freezing after about 2min after booting. Yesterday I blew up a mushroom in the microwave, sounded like an m80. There was mush every where. Next time I'll be sure to cover my curry :-) Tonight I still smell the faint remnants of pesticide in my bedroom, so if no one sprayed last night, there must be a dead cockroach in there somewhere.
