Bird Feeder Gone
October 07, 2011 3:29 PM
Last weekend I bought a bird feeder to put just outside my basement windows so the cats would have something to look at. Well this morning, much to my horror, not only was the bird feeder missing, so was the ground-buried-pole, and also the heavy rope suspending it! All no where to be found. All I have to say is, that must have been one big frekin bird!

Osaka II Japanese Restaurant
September 15, 2011 1:48 PM
We found our favorite place for fine dining in Johnson City. Osaka on North Roan has a fresh sushi bar, some really exotic appetizers, bottled wine specials, sake, asian beers, great Udon noodle dishes, sweet decor and nice waitresses.

UPS Store
September 9, 2011 2:36 PM
Those UPS stores are the most worthless piece of crap out there. I don't know why they are even allowed to carry the name UPS because they ARE NOT UPS, they are individually owned authorized retailers. They do NOT have accesses to ANY UPS database, accounts, address libraries, or even corporate account shipping numbers. Their rates are also much higher than they should be because they take a cut of the actual shipping costs. If you want the actual UPS services you have to find a distribution center, and unfortunately those are not as numerous. Luckily there's one with in 20miles or so from here if I absolutely need one.

Pet Centipede
June 07, 2011 6:42 PM
A few days ago I thought I saw a piece of string lying on the carpet in front of my washer and dryer, I kicked it to verify it wasn't anything alive, and much to my surprise it was very much alive! Of all the critters, I like centipedes the least, and living in TN I've been fortunate enough to say I've never seen a house-centipede since I moved here, but today I saw something new, a garden-centipede in my house!
I ended up trapping it and decided to keep it as a pet. Even though I fear this little thing, there is something about it that I find incredibly fascinating.
After a little research I found that it's very venomous. It bights its prey until they're paralyzed, then it eats them. To a human it's bight would resemble a bee sting. I have to keep the container moist and feed it large bugs twice a week. In the second picture you can see it destroyed a cicada (which are plentiful and easy to catch this year)

COMMENT: It`s vicious! See it severed the cicada`s head and made burrows in its abdomen and neck?

Nashville 13 year Cicadas
May 22, 2011 6:33 PM
Apparently this is the year the XIX brood of cicadas return to middle Tennessee. They emerge from the ground, attach themselves any place they can, molt out of the old skins, harden and grow a little for about 4 days, then begin their buzzing in an attempt to attract a mate. They will continue to buzz all day every day until about July. And man are they loud! I can drive down the highway at 60mph with the windows rolled up and still hear them! Billions of them. Then they lay their eggs in tree branch slits and the ground and there they will stay for another 13 years.
They are like the most useless insect ever. They are only out for about 2 months, just long enough to mate, then they're gone again for many years. Apparently all the other animals flourish while their out, though, feasting on them the whole time. You can even eat the shells! High in protein and they supposedly taste like almonds.
There are different broods for different regions of the US. The ones in the north tend to be on a 17 year cycle. And I do remember when I was a little kid picking the shells off my grandmothers trees back when she lived on her farm. So PA should be due for a wave soon.

COMMENT: random fact from NPR-- animals that stay inactive for years tend to do this in prime number cycles. thus the 13 and 17 numbers :) i think it is evolutionally advantageous.

COMMENT: Man, I really wanted to be reading out on the porch but their chit-chattering is too noisy. I`d have the ringing in my ear after I`m out on the porch for awhile. And that`s such an interesting fact, Jue! Prime numbers, huh? I wonder why.

Softball Spring Fling 2011
May 06, 2011 6:51 PM
Today was our annual spring fling at work. It's a team building day held at a near-by park where people can play organized games of softball or soccer. We even got a free catered lunch by Famous Daves. The softball teams were organized by department so I was on the Engineering Services team, which is the best team btw :-) I played 2nd base and center-left outfield. I'm getting better and better at the infield positions, but I still learn something new every year. This year also happened to be the first year my team won! We pretty much dominated all 3 games. Regardless, I always have a lot of fun (provided I remember my sun-screen), we totally need to do this more than once a year!

Earth Day Seedling
May 01, 2011 9:00 AM
I participated in an EarthDay fund raiser at work last week and they gave me a Colorado Blue Spruce seedling to plant. So I'm just writing this entry to document it's planting so when it's big and huge I can tell exactly how old it is.
